Being Lazy with 2D graphics

Post by Khearts »

Lets say hypothetically, I really don't want to create decent 2D graphics on programs such as GIMP or Paint/.NET. Is it common or even advised that I make simple 3D models, render them, PrintScreen button them, and save it as a .bmp/.png file?

well I'm sure you've played Diablo II before, that's exactly what they did in that. There's definitely nothing wrong with doing this, it's just (personally) harder to make look good than either 3D or 2D.

You do realize that this technique is the entire reason that Rareware ever made it big?

They decided to use 3D models to generate the sprites in Donkey Kong Country... it was revolutionary at the time and was the reason that the animation is so goddamn fluid.

So much so that Nintendo licensed the Donkey Kong series to them, they became a 1st party developer, and the technique was used in tons of other high-end SNES games.
