Okay so I got done looking through a bunch of the sites in the sticky post about pixel art, the derek yu one was Super helpful. Wanted to get a little feedback if you would.

I followed (or tried) the steps for shading from here http://www.derekyu.com/?page_id=225 but the highlight spots look odd to me, like stains or spots on his shirt and hair. Is there a rule of thumb for highlight coloring?

Another thing, when the image is really small like this (64x64) it seems really hard to add detail for things like the eyes and mouth, would it be bad just to leave the mouth out?
Also any other tips for things you notice I'm doing a terrible job at would be much appreciated. it was my first go on drawing pixel art. Thanks all.

You made your first mistake by saving and uploading it as a JPG. Don't. Ever. Do. This. Ever.

PNG and Gif are your choices.

Much better, now here are a few things I noticed:

Proportions are bad
You have VERY similar colors, I could BARELY distinguish between them when I zoomed in 8x ... You don't need both if they look so similar...
Your outline needs more cleaning up.
The lighting suggests that the person is a balloon.

Here's a quick and rough edit:

I didn't change the colors, but using them this way shows way too much contrast imo D:

ok awesome, thanks for the feedback, yours just looks a lot more crisp.

I have been messing around with some of the things you mentioned in your 2nd post, changing proportions helped a lot.

you might laugh but it was intended to be a guy, haha, some of the reason the shoulders are so broad. I was going for more of a leon kennedy hair cut

quick question, the balloon looking part, is that due to me using the wrong color in the direction i tried to indicate the light is coming from or just bad placement of the color?

again man, i appreciate it

The balloon feel comes from the lack of shadows where they're supposed to be :)
