Ketogenic Diet Resources

Post by Falco Girgis »

I'm starting this thread as a sticky to great resources on ketosis and high-fat/low-carb ketogenic diets for beginners. We can modify this post and keep it as a central repository of information. Both high-level diet and low-level science resources are welcome (depending on how deep people want to go). YouTube videos, articles, academic papers, and books welcome.

I wanted to share a few fantastic books by a couple well-respected doctors in field that provide amazing resources for the more advanced dieters who are interested in optimizing and understanding more of the low-level science:

Superfuel:

Author: Dr. James DiNicolantonio & Dr. Joseph Mercola
ISBN-13: 978-1401956356
ISBN-10: 1401956351

If you're consuming primarily fats as metabolic fuel, the next level is to understand the nuances between the different types of fats (saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, trans, etc), and to understand the correct ratios of each for optimal health. Knowing these nuances will allow you to graduate from dirty keto-eating newb who merely gets weight loss and insulin sensitivity benefits to clean keto-eating monk who gets the full slew of metabolic and health benefits by knowing which fats are inflammatory and lead to insulin resistance and which are fantastic sources of energy or are required for optimal cellular operation.

Which oil are you cooking with? Which meats are you favoring? Are you eating too many high omega-6 nuts? You getting enough omega-3?

Ketofast:

Author: Dr. Joseph Mercola
ISBN-10: 1401956793

Ketogenic diets go hand-in-hand with time-restricted feeding and intermittent fasting, as you're running on ketones for fuel during fasted periods (and lots of the main benefits of the fast come from just increased ketones). It turns out ketogenic diets are clever hacks to convince your mitochondria that you're in a semi-fasted state with limited nutrient availability, allowing you to slip further into states of autophagy and get fasting benefits of cellular cleanup and repair in a fed or semi-fed state. This book is for advanced ketogenic dieters and fasters looking to combine the two for to maximize the benefits of metabolic autophagy that normally require long-term starvation-style fasts while still getting to eat smaller high-fat ketogenic diets that trick your cells into thinking you're still starving.

Fantastic read that is the crossroads between keto and fasting.
