I'd point out Call of Duty but ever since they introduced that new revolutionary Dog model I don't know anymore...

Many sports franchises do that Madden isn't alone in that respect. However, I think you have to look at sports games as a special case. Many sports gamers will buy a "new" version for updated rosters.
