I'm curious; what's powering your server? Like, processor/ram etc. I'm just curious cuz I think I might be able to turn one of my parents' old computers into a workable server.

It's an intel POS, with neg-A ram, and a heater in place of the fan to keep the air flowing.

With POS beaing "piece of shit," neg-A being "negative ass," and to answer your question: probably. ;p

As you can see, you don't need a powerful PC unless your serving lots of customers at the same time.

I actually like Windows 7 on my laptop as well, it surprisingly performs rather well, I have no complaints. I still get all the bells and whistles from the laptop and between Vista, I tried XP 64bit on that machine and it ran like shit in comparison to 7.

Enjoy your toys. :P

Oh and Marcel, I beat your ass with a 3.2gz quad core phenom. :D

Dear god, they actually ported ES to a piece of celery!

Oh, shit. After that whole monologue, I just realized that you were referring to a powerPC for a server. ;p

The term powerpc should be well defined when talking in a thread about apple computers.
powerpc is also a risk processor that was used in apple computers for the longest time.

anyways, falco and marcel, see if there is a little round button on the left hand side, you can barely see it. it tells you how much battery you have left.
the computer can be completely off and you can still see. i thought that was sweet.

My server's running like 128kb RAM, 800MHz processor, 20GB HDD. You can run linux on just about anything though.

Yeah, as long as you dont expect many connections at once you can have it on low end machines.
ginto, my advice is buying a ibm 1U(1 unit, smallest size) rack mount server off ebay, you can get them for like 150-300. big time deals.

http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-xSeries-336-DUA ... 585wt_1159

you just need to get hd/'s for that one. so thats another 100 bux, (scsi is $$$). but still you can pick that up for 200-300, enterprise level server for next to nothing. and thats a duel xeon 3.6GHz, 2 - gig ethernet ports. it only comes with 1 PSU, but you can put a redundant one in. comes with dvd-rom, and most importantly, free shipping to continental US.

I actually have two servers at the min, a compaq ml350 G2 and a compaq ml350 G3, they may not be the latest models but they do the job fine (and on startup they sound like a plane taking off). They used to belong to my uncle and he doesnt need them anymore. I'm only using the G3 atm, i'm not really sure what to do with the other one yet but i'm sure i'll think of something ;)
