Underground Intellectual/Mind-Expanding Music

Post by Nohbdy »

Take a deep breath, there's nothing to be afraid of.

Gotta lose your mind before you find it,
And when you finally find it, you'll find out you never lost it at all.

Don't worry about explainin' it, there ain't no human language
that can actually describe exactly how you feel.

The Dive

Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers)
It starts out with a question. How much of it is real?
The skepticism sets in, and lessens your appeal
Next, you study conspiracy, develop some theories
And become extra wary of all your previous learned material
Your tolerence for stupidity degrades
Most of your friends seem to be trapped in the maze
You narrow your associates down to the few you can stand
And even they sometimes wonder what's going on in that head of yours
You study east and western philosophy, psychology, physics
You think a lot more, and start to question existence
You wonder about your nervous system's limits
You tamper with reality maps, and then ask hallucinogenic induced
"Who am I's? What am I? Am I forever?"
All information breathes in the shallow dark hells of never
You can see where it's leading. You wish you were dreaming
If the castle crumbles no one's there to put it back together

[Chorus]
Have you ever felt yourself slippin' away?
Where all you think about's your sanity, and how it decayed?
There's no place to run, no place to hide
You can't escape from inside, and you're losing your mind
You try to think of when it started, and ask yourself why
But each thought deepens the sickness and completes the desert dry
Fear feeds the derangement of the inner eye
With nothing left you find yourself falling to madness so you...

... cry to your god, and act normal to your peers
What if God ain't hearing you? That's your only fear
Each day you think more about your psychosis
No one but you can help you, and you know this
That's the craziest part of it all
In your rational mind, you only know two things for sure
One is that your totally nuts
And the other is that you're the only one with the cure
It doesn't make sense, it's not how you imagined
You never knew it could just happen
You thought it came from stress, suicide, a near death experience
War, drug trips, low pay ,carelessness
You've heard plenty of stories about schizophrenia
But never had evidence of one who thought himself mad
You're going crazy, and desperately reachin' for reason
But the strain to stay sane's your only demon; best believe it

[Chorus]

You finally realize that you've always lived in hell
No human model or metaphor can explain how you fell
The puzzle's alive, and it changes as you try to escape it
It created time and made it appear to pass by
You don't know what you think. You don't think what you know
You're a total lunatic, and afraid it's starting to show
Where do you go when your brain is your worst enemy?
The six hundred and sixty six foot tall bridge on seventh street?
You're scared. You're scared. Why are you so scared?
There'd be no problem if you didn't care
Now you've truly formed an opinion about heaven
It starts out with a question, and this is what it ends in

Now I know you've felt yourself slip away
Now all you think about's your sanity, and how it decayed
There's no place to run. No place to hide
You can't escape the fact that you've lost your mind
You can't erase your mistakes. There's no way to rewind
The harder you look, the harder it is to find
Fear feeds the derangement of the inner eye
With nothing left you find yourself falling to madness, so you dive
so you dive (repeated)

And with each foot you fall
the voice in your head starts to sound more and more like yours

Well Being(4:11)

Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers)
[background]
And now the voice in your head IS yours

[Eyedea]
Take a deep breath there's nothing to be afraid of
What you just did was fall to the depths of existence
The place the mind keeps you away from by it's own process
of building models for understanding
This is not insanity, this is in fact the ultimate reality
The union you've acheived is only possible in thoughts no more
You never fall if you never fight

[background]
You never fall if you never fight

[repeat 2X]
You found yourself falling into madness so you dove
The best thing you ever did was let go

[repeat 2X]
I found myself falling into madness so I dove
The best thing I ever did was let go

[Eyedea]
See life is a play that we are always acting out
without ever seeing it from the writers or audiences point of view
When we reach infinity we become the writer
the actors and the audience at the exact same time

So here you are, and now you understand
You always were here, that's why you always ran
But you can only run away for so long
Before you catch up with yourself and become part of the song
I'd like to welcome you, to the heaven you've created
I tell the truth, this is the wisdom of the ancients
Holding onto something contradicts or being, so fly free {*repeat 4X*}
Maybe I had to go crazy to get where I am
I felt myself slipping away and I let myself fall
Gotta lose your mind before you find it
And when you finally find it you'll find out you never lost it at all
There's a natural flow, that's attached to the soul
It don't ask you to go, it just gradually pulls
It's always now and your never not you
So follow yourself because if nothing else your existence is true

[Chorus]
have you ever felt yourself slipping away? I am, I mean, I was slipping away
but no matter what I am I'm me, and I know me so I'm ok
have you ever felt yourself slipping away? you are, I mean, you were, slipping away
but no matter what you are you you, and you know you so your ok

[Eyedea]
I'm not a poet or a communist, a comet or a star
You're not a genius or a prophet, you just are
I'm not insane cause I have no need for my sanity
It's just another chain that keeps me from reality
Reality is mine to play with and mold
the best thing I ever did was let go
So let go of the models transend the physical mind
and peacefully become part of the whole
The walls came tumbling down, but this town it was for creeps
I've been runnin around, lookin for my feet
And now a part of the ground, and if the ground complete
Live in the now and forever be at peace
Live in the now don't stray away from the cycle
I'm one with the universe, one with the life flow
When you know that that which is below is above
the fear you once had will become love (feel the love)

[Chorus]

[Eyedea]
It starts out with a question. how much of it is real?
Now all is irrelevant, outside of this ordeal
Don't worry about explainin it there ain't no human language
that can actually describe exactly how you feel
Now I see clear, through external distractions
Piece by piece it comes together, so I laugh and I smile
In the beginning it was deranged
But I guess all things come to pass, after awhile
If madness could have a picture face how would it look?
like step one to becoming the contents of your own book?
Right where you are right now is where your gonna stay
And as long as you're always moving with yourself you'll, never slip away

---
*Notes: This is only two of many amazing songs by E&A, in fact this would probably make even more sense after hearing(and seeing the lyrics) of others. I will continually add more, along with lyrics. If it gets too cluttered I'll switch to links to videos and links to lyrics. I also have a desire to listen and fix any lyrics, we'll see.
By the way sorry for the dang video's advertisement and ending.. but it was the best quality of the two songs on YouTube, and the video goes pretty well.

I can't help but find relevance to programming in these concepts!
Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers)
If someone grew up in a cubicle as Plato once suggested
They would only know the cubicle and not the world outside it
And they wouldn't view the cubicle as something geometric
We only know it's a cubicle because we live outside

Now the one inside the cubicle can't comprehend its measurements
Because measurements are models made up for and by observers
Relative to their position on the outside of the cubicle
They understand objectively so they can study further

If I grew up in a cubicle the walls limit my universe
I have no knowledge of the entirety like the outsiders do
If you follow what I say and can swallow the powdered water
Close your eyes and open your mind, this one's for you

The brain equals a cubicle we'll never think outside it
Now decide I wanna try to tie a diagram or modify it
I'm man that’s a hybrid of a body of a pirate
Of a soul that can fly without control

Realizing the brain takes in six billion signals per second
most of which are hidden and not given to the senses
We’re limited to a few futile primitive tools of perception
Living in a universal pool of first hand deception

The mind's job is to receive the signals
And block the ones out that coincide with imprinted symbols
That way the information you obtained is recognized
Reality is thinkable and comparable to space and time

It makes a map of the territory that gives us
The topic of the Copenhagen interpretation of modern quantum
Physics which states we don’t know the meal
We only know the menu that our brains tell us is real

We don’t know the rules of our heads
From inside these cubicles we can’t see the truth
No one really knows exactly what happens when we think
Therefore we can never really ever know anything

Not sure if I understand it, are the songs themselves meant to be mind-expanding or is it just that the lyrics are about mind-expansion?

There are plenty of people who don't comprehend this kind of stuff... maybe it's just where I live.. or maybe it's because I'm in a forum of many programmers and game developers hah.. not to say that programmers and etc are more likely to be more intellectual than the average person on Earth but.... in a way I.. kind of am saying that x.x err. Stereotyping, I know, it just seems like to program you "have" to have at least a slight form of abstract conceptual awareness - such as what's represented in these kinds of songs - in order to really do some serious programming. I think it's just something that comes with the skillset of the job/hobby, rather than the commonly-picked jobs and hobbies of the masses, where many people simply just want to work "for money"(which leaves a wide opportunity for non-intellectual work) and their hobbies seem to usually be made of up of mindless entertainment, watching T.V., and generally enjoying the "ignorance is bliss" lifestyle.

There's so much of the attitude: "I just want to make a lot of money, life sucks, I'm gonna party hard, fux my health, fux contributing to society other than what I'm forced to do, I want a big car and house, woo sports team, have sex with many people, maybe one day have a family and die hoping my religion let's me continue my pattern"

So to your question, some songs specifically talk about mind-expansion yes, but otherwise I'm sure the songs "would" expand you mind if you were the ^above^ stated type of person with enough willpower - or maybe even knowledge of the English language - to comprehend what is being stated in these songs.

Edit: I'd like to correct that when I say "majority of people", I don't have the right to say "of all Earth", so in this case I mean only what I know of, but in no hard offense: America. Perhaps other countries who's majority are similar to America's as well, if you know of them.
This is one of a few songs that seem to represent this:
--- Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in fruit salad. ---

On this I stand,
Two sets of footprints placed ahead of the dirt softened from tear drops
And overlooking the earth as the son of a moon
Protected by a forcefield of pure thought.
On this I stand
A rally of unemployed disgruntled words gone for long journeys through somewhere
somewhere that only causes (calls) me pain, as I strain my soul, cramming it with light
so I can bring some there.
I bleed the blood of a cold stone that rolls (roams) without a shadow
I'm only deep enough to realize that I'm shallow.
My head, I keep it up, but it’s hard to keep it straight
when you don't believe in love,
and you just cant cope with hate
Metal rust, leafs turn into dust,
as the difference between love and lust clarifies as trust.
If you only had an hour to sum your whole life up
would you spend that hour saying that an hour ain't enough?
I've escaped the shell that bound me to cowardice.
Now I'm faithful to the wind but compared to it I'm powerless.
The first step was made, and it was a fair accomplishment.
the pond was sitting still, so I threw a rock in it
and as my reflection rippled, it all became clear
seasons always change, so there's no reason for fear
we made an autobiography of our pivotal years
its all I got and I'm giving it you because I care.
See, a lot of the time humans as artists exist in (insist on) a
Self-projected state of falsehood
we’re either too close to our image to be objective in our perception (conception)
or too far away to be subjective in any matter
this only widens the void that social conformity
introduced to our souls at birth, and so I write.
But, I don't write without the intention of objectivity
or attention on the image,
but only as an omni-directional bridge
between the several flowing (tunnel-structural?)
realities present in comparable space and time.
See I don't write for the future.
I write about the future, for the present.
I write with my past, about the future, for the present.
On this I stand,
The oasis of the limbo
adjacent to my generation,
facing out the window
waiting for some ventilation,
patient while the wind blows
graceful in its demonstration,
overall innovation (an ovation).
On this I stand
A fountain of youth, sovereignty,
A thousand syllables more than a pound of flesh.
A deep breath of achievement, a dream and a wake up call
another hall of the quest.
On this I stand
A letter to civilization.
On this I stand
The purity of creation.
On this I stand
A paradigm for self.
On this I stand
A thank you for your help.
On this I stand
My firstborn child.
On this I stand
Something for now.
On this I stand
Life, love, death and hate.
On this I stand
An album, glad you can (could) relate.
Peace.

When it comes to “intellectual” music I tend to favor music w/o vocals or coherent vocals. The lack of vocals, I feel, compels one to dwell on the good stuff! If people opt to be morons then let them be morons so that rappers can have a job! :)

People may happily be morons once we've colonized other planets(because then, your options for lifestyle and government are far more varied than the limited countries constrained by the boundaries of this planet), but for now many of our decision-systems rely on a Democracy(supposedly) which leave the majority in charge, and in that sense they may as well have control over the survivability of the human race. A Democracy is great if most everyone is educated and open-minded enough to actually be certified to be part of such huge decisions, and that's not how it is.

Those who want to become more intelligent as a priority of life... give them better options. I seek education, yet I "constantly" find sources of information hidden amongst the mainstream and I think "What!? Why wasn't I aware of this sooner!?". Perhaps many people want to learn, at least while they're young... and it's a matter of them not finding what they want, or it's society taking advantage of their more-easily-influenced mind and conditioning them for productivity to individual and/or group wants, rather than the needs of the species. We "already" have some form of semi-forced education among citizens... but that system is just teaching the wrong things, or in the wrong way, or something that simply isn't "enough". Why the heck do I barely hear of programming classes in high schools? Why is China outputting 1,000 programmers per 1 of ours? Why is the path barely even advertised or shown any enthusiasm?

If the system isn't going to do it, then make a change the same way they tell you your vote matters and how recycling works. As for me, I speak of knowledge and possibility all the time... it's natural to my way of conversing, but it's also a chance that... well some lyrics yet again can put this into perspective:
"...I spit rhymes hoping that someone who thinks like me
Related to the emotions interlocked within the phyche
..."

You should probably lay off on the lyrics a bit as I doubt anyone is going to read that much text. Provide a off-site link if you like, but I'm sure anyone who's interested can find them on their own.

My previous post was more a reflection of this. I agree that these songs are intellectual in their topics, but I didn't find that this music was particularly mind-expanding when I'm being told what I'm meant to think. In my opinion, mind-expansion is when you are made to think for yourself. When it comes to trance-inducing music, I prefer Indian things:

thejahooli wrote: My previous post was more a reflection of this. I agree that these songs are intellectual in their topics, but I didn't find that this music was particularly mind-expanding when I'm being told what I'm meant to think. In my opinion, mind-expansion is when you are made to think for yourself.
Much truth in this, except not consistent and effective enough.... the sad thing is that "everything" around us in our day-to-day lives is pulsating with the same potential for you to trance-into an intellectual mind-set, some people need drugs, some need music, some need both, some need just to see it, or touch it, or taste it. It's probably a definition of "art" in general...
Art can't do it all though, at least not for the people not able to translate it that way. Our entire human language is based off of "what you're meant to think" in order to have a "standard" that people with the same language knowledge can pick-up on, two conversing people have to agree on a word's definition or a phrase's meaning(and even then, the more flexibility you add, the more ambiguity... and the mix-match between definitions and meanings causes a large percent of arguments: "you said X, which means Y!" "no, I did say X, but it doesn't mean Y, it means Z!").

A wordless music piece can "try" to teach me how to program without words, maybe it can work but my brain isn't on such a level... so for now, instead of the possible Morse-code of pure-music, I'm gonna have to stick with the rap that teaches me syntax implementation. :P (I'm writing a programming and/or C++ usage rap btw haha)

That doesn't help keep the size of the forum database reasonable (technically it increases it EVER so slightly, lol). Links are still preferred.

I shall definitely get to this! EDIT: Going to revamp the entire thread into more organization as well.

For now though :P...
