Fantasy RPG

Hi all,
I am currently using and learning Unity. I desire to create games that are set in a fantasy Universe.
However I am more interested in the game development and the level design than creating my own system from scratch.
I have played Pen and Paper D&D and Pathfinder.
Does any have any suggestions of similar RPG systems with the same depth of background material for which I can obtain the rules and character guides for free?
I do not really wish to rip of D&D, as far as I am aware there are no games based on Pathfinder out there, but I'm not sure if I will be breaking copyright laws by using their combat and character mechanics.
