All of Chrono Trigger's music is great, but I have a particular fondness for the main theme... it's just so epic.

Since retro is anything before 2004, I'd have to say that Fire Emblem has the best sound track of any handheld game ever.

Also, Sonic Adventure 2 had awesome music IMO (Final Hazard boss music)
If only I could be so grossly incandescent

Short list, not necessarily in order (how can you compare such beautiful works of art?)...
  • Mega Man (definitely #1!)
  • One Must Fall: 2097
  • MARIO BROTHERS!
  • Jazz Jack Rabbit
  • Falcon 3.0 (I'd always get hyped up when I heard it)
  • Age of Empires (I still listen to this occasionally)
  • Commander Keen: Marooned on Mars (I don't recall it having 'music' but, the audio was epic!)
More are unlisted, but this is the main jist of what comes to mind! :)
