Guild Wars Total Cost?

Post by Bludklok »

So I've been looking for an mmorpg lately to kind of give me a break from programming every now and then... Though I've been searching for one that wouldn't take too much of a hit on my wallet.

I've looked through a lot of the P2P mmorpg's and Guild Wars seams promising + no monthly fee. Since there are 3 or so expansions and what not I've got a couple questions.
  • Do I need all the expansions or just the latest game?
  • If so, how much am I looking at spending for all of the expansions + the game.
Eh, yea that's pretty much it. Would be awesome if someone could answer them for me. :D

I believe how it works is that each expansion is it's own standalone game. All you really need is either the original or one expansion to play, but you can only play through that content. Each expansion is like, a new storyline, and therefore you make a whole new character and all of that.

Guild Wars is comprised of three campaigns and one expansion. The three campaigns are Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall. These are all stand-alone games, each with its own unique storyline. Eye of the North is the only true expansion. You must have a campaign to play Eye of the North. If you have multiple games linked to your account, your characters can travel to campaigns other than the one in which they were created (Assuming you complete the appropriate quests).

Each campaign, on its own, will have four character slots. Every time you add a campaign to your account, that you didn't have before, you get an additional two character slots. So, you get eight character slots for linking all campaigns to one account. Eye of the North doesn't add character slots.

As for the cost, it shouldn't be too high. You should be able to pick up Guild Wars: Trilogy (Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall) for about $50. Eye of the North should be about $30. It probably goes without saying, but never buy used. :)

The developer of Guild Wars, Arenanet, has stated that they won't be shutting down the servers when Guild Wars 2 goes live, which will be awhile from now. If you decide to get it, you should be able to play for quite a few years. Overall, I'd say it's a good buy, but don't expect any great developer updates.
Judge not a man by his language but by his use of the language.

Wow... Thank you for the in-depth answer. :D

Although I haven't really read it yet (just scimmed through it quick) because I'm too tired. :|

Every part(prophecies, factions, nightfall) is a game for itself (you don't need anything else except one of the 3 games to play)
but there is one actual expansion called Eye of The North which you need prophecies(the "first" game) to play,
There IS a story in this game and the sequence in Prophecies->Factions->NIghtfall
^Eye of the north

Edit:
You CAN transfer characters from game to game! you need to do a "travel quest" which is really easy :(

In the campaigns factions and NIghtfall there are 2 classes in each game you can only create in it's original game.

After all, you have 10 different classes to choose from.

You can play eye of the north with any of the three first campigns, but it is a little more related to the first one(builds on the story from the first one). If you get Eye of the north, you will be able to transfer some achivements(not anything with gameplay advantages) to Guildwars2 when it arrives. In the first campaign, there is quite a bit level 1-19 content, but in the two others, its a very little bit wich is from 1-19(and that little bit is like a tutorial), that means you can play nearly all of the game with your level 20 charactor from another campaign. Eye of the north is only level 20 content. (as you might know, guild wars isent focused in leveling)

If you plan on getting into PvP, it would be a good idea to get all of the games, since you will probably need skills from all of them(im not sure if eye of the north introduces any new skills that can be used in PvP though). I havent played that many MMO's but i think Guildwars has the best PvP of all of them.

EOTN introduces some general skills (I think only 10 for each profession though, and no Elites at all)
plus EOTN introduces "Dungeons" GW's interpretation for the WoW Instances.

Noo.... these are all the campaigns in one package ... you enter one code (i think) and can play all the campaigns.
Or you get 3 different codes, anyway... it's the 3 games in one pack, costs less!
You don't get Eye of North though :P (doesn't really matters if u haven't beaten these games)

Guild wars is a great game. But in the southern east coast of usa you get some network lag on district 1. Still playable though. Gets better once you leave main town.
