Unless you want a text-only game, you'll likely need to learn some sort of graphics library. http://lazyfoo.net/SDL_tutorials/index.php is popular. If you want network capabilities (networked multiplayer of some sort), http://beej.us/guide/bgnet/ is awesome.

Yeah my general rule is "if you come back in two years from never seeing it will the comments make sense". As opposed to the other standard of "if someone new comes to the project that's never seen it will the comments make sense" because that tends to make things a bit too verbo...
