Anvil Studio is also a free midi editing program, and there's Dr. Petter's Musagi, which is a mixer for making more old-school sounding stuffs.

The SHMUP tutorial is currently getting done, bit by bit, but the written version is already up, if you need. And make sure to check out the LazyFoo tutorials as well, since there's a ton of stuff there as well.

Knowing myself, I'll probably pick it up eventually, but definitely not right away. It's rare that I buy a game brand-new, and usually only for smaller companies (Brutal Legend, Boy and his Blob).
